Free Valley Transportation Authority services may be a possibility in the future according to the De Anza Associated Student Body Senate. Eco Pass, the title of the service, is being offered by VTA. However, Eco Pass will not be on the ballot until after the student elections. If passed byt student voters, Eco Pass will give students free access to busses and light rails. For the free services, students would be required to pay a $2-$5 fee at the time of registration.”I’m confident the Eco Pass will make it onto the ballot,” said senate President, Robin Claassen. “It’s a great program and many students will benefit from it.” However, the VTA is concerned that if the Eco Pass were available to all De Anza students, some might take advantage of the situation by registering for a half unit class to receive the Eco Pass. One solution is to restrict the Eco Pass to full-time students at De Anza who are enrolled in 12 units or more. Another consideration to is when the fee would be administered. Claassen said that there are quite a few questions from both the VTA and the DASB that still need answering, but feels the VTA Eco Pass will be a useful program for students if passed. The Eco Pass was originally designed for large businesses to provide transportation options for employees other than driving or carpooling, but has also been adopted by universities to ease commuting for students.
