The De Anza College Dons men’s soccer team faced the Hartnell College Panthers at the final home game of the season. After an attempt to bring victory to the homestead, the Dons lost the match, 4-1.
The match started off with a good omen – the Dons scoring a goal within the first starting minute of the game. Unfortunately luck for De Anza’s players ran out and didn’t last for the rest of the game.
During the first half, Hartnell played on the offense, with the ball always in possession of the forwards and hovering around the De Anza goal. De Anza goalkeeper Adrian Monroy was on the top of his game, blocking a total of four goals and always kicking the ball towards the mid field to keep some distance between the goal and the ball.
Despite Monroy’s attempts, Hartnell scored a goal 24 minutes into the game, tying the score to 1-1.
De Anza’s defense put up a good match by blocking Hartnell’s forwards and passing the ball back to Hartnell’s goal side.
Yet Hartnell’s forwards played fiercely, scoring a second goal 15 minutes later, and a third goal five minutes later. By half-time Hartnell took the lead with De Anza following by two points, making the score 3-1.
Throughout the game, Hartnell played on offense, forcing the Dons to focus their energy on playing defense and leaving them with little time and attention to play on the offense. After half-time, within the next 10 minutes of the game, Hartnell shot another goal, putting the team three points ahead.
The Dons were determined to keep their goal score free for the last 30 minutes of the game, and the ball bounced between Hartnell’s side of the field and De Anza’s side.
With 28 minutes left on the clock, Hartnell threw the ball back into bounds and inched the ball towards the goal. Monroy grabbed the ball and threw it towards a teammate. The ball was passed all the way to Hartnell’s side of the field but then passed back to De Anza’s.
The ball advanced towards the goal and then went out of bounds. Hartnell kicked the ball back into play and De Anza snatched the ball and began to pass it away from their goal all the way to the middle of the field.
Hartnell managed to move the ball towards De Anza’s goal yet again and kicked the ball towards the net, but Monroy blocked that shot and threw the ball out of bounds.
The whistle was blown, signaling the end of the game as soon as Hartnell had kicked the ball onto the field. De Anza lost the match with a score of 4-1.
Although the Dons didn’t bring home victory, great determination was displayed when hopes of winning looked dim. The crowd greeted them with hearty hugs and yells of appreciation that showed the players that on the home field, they would always be favored no matter the outcome of the game.
