Many are looking to public transportation to reduce traffic and commute times, but all public transportation does is waste time and cause stress. Nuisances such as delays, overcrowding, restricted hours, nauseating odors, no personal space, and fare increases are just a few of the downfalls of public transportation. Crime is also a risk when taking public transit. Theft, violence, and exposure to drug use are all unpleasant and alarming possibilities. Trump’s military tweets degrade presidential office

While President Donald Trump’s social media presence is informative, he should not use Twitter to command our military. Trump has used Twitter to announce the “fake news awards,” to promote his favorite Fox News shows like “Justice with Judge Jeanine” and “Fox and Friends” and to announce military strikes in Syria. Pronouncing military strategy in the same manner as his demagoguery diminishes the importance of such an announcement.

Opinion: Dishonest administration endangers baseball players

De Anza College’s administration clearly demonstrated that student safety is not its top priority by placing Erich Raich, head coach of our baseball team, on administrative leave for trying to keep his team safe by fixing their mistake. When the team walked onto the field on February 24 for a game against Folsom Lake, they found that Robert Bothman’s construction company used clay for ceramic pots in the pitcher’s mound. This clay does not stay firm and sinks like mud, creating a serious injury risk.

Zuckerberg hearing not a joke

Our biggest takeaway from Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony on April 10 should not be memes about his robotic demeanor, but knowledge that Facebook has been spreading misinformation and protecting itself from liabilities while leaving its user’s information exposed. Until now, Facebook has been mostly self-regulated and operated with little transparency. Lawmakers should be acting on behalf of the people by holding Facebook accountable and working towards security.

Attention petitioners: Go away

Petitioners at De Anza College should leave our campus and never come back. Students at De Anza are constantly bombarded with petitions. Despite the mostly optimistic spirits on campus, some students just want to get to class without the distraction of intolerable petitioners. They don’t need your time or attention, nor do you owe them anything. They’re smart for coming on to campuses because they can easily pry on the naive, more approachable students and get signatures or a simple response.

Campus petitions essential to De Anza awareness

You are walking on campus to the cafeteria or an upcoming class when you see someone approach you and hear the words that you really don’t want to hear: “Would you like to sign a petition in support of this legislation?” Petitioners, donation collectors and the occasional inflammatory fire-and-brimstone preacher are common sights at De Anza College, yet among these visitors, petitioners play a particularly vital role in our local and federal governments’ political processes. They are an essential part of our campus, whether we like their presence or not.
