De Anza College has named Kulwant Singh, currently head coach ofthe men’s soccer team to the position of athletic director,effective July 1, 2004.
Singh will succeed former Athletic director Charlie Elder, whowill retire at the end of June.
Elder leaves De Anza after 36 years in which time he has servedas the schools first ever male Women’s Volleyball coach, and a 12year stint as the Don’s football coach.
Going into his 15th year as a De Anza instructor, Singh hascoached both the men’s and women’s soccer teams to numerous coastconference championships and in 1994 and 1997 lead the men’s teamto the state championship along with six seasons as statefinalists.
In 2001, Singh was named the California Community College Men’sState Coach of the Year.
But Singh’s experience goes far beyond De Anza.
From 1984 to 1991, Singh was head coach to both the boy’s andgirl’s Northern California Olympic Development program.
Singh also served as technical director for the program.
Before joining the De Anza family, Singh was assistant coach forCalifornia State Hayward’s soccer program, serving as assistant forboth the men’s and women’s program.
Singh took a sabbatical to reenergize and turned the reins overto Colin Lindores for the 2003-2004 season where the Don’s men’steam ranked sixth in the northern region and finished with a 14-4-3overall record.
Dean of Physical Education and Athletics Ron Warnock will remainand report to Singh.
Singh will continue to serve as the men’s soccer coach throughthe 2004-2005 season.
