De Anza’s third Annual Intramural Soccer Cup took place on June 13. Hosted by Latino Empowerment at De Anza (LEAD), 100-150 students joined together on the soccer field to play and cheer on their friends.
Adrian Asbun, the president of LEAD organized the event as one of his projects for his EWRT 2 class taught by Marc Coronado. The theme was “Sports for World Peace.” The first project was a panel that featured Olympic championTommie Smith as a guest speaker.
“Our intention is to unite the diverse De Anza student body through friendly semi-competitive soccer matches,” Luis Flores of LEAD said.
The event proved to do just that.
“The nicest thing I’ve seen today is students coming without a team and being welcomed by others to join their team,” said, Mariela Garcia of LEAD.
Students formed into eight teams. Each team could have up to 12 players, with at least two females and three De Anza soccer players.
The teams were: Duval, LEAD; Corona FC; Puente; Awesome; ThanJump; Lazy, and El Halween. Duval and Corona made it to the finals, but Corona FC triumphed with a final score of 4-0.
Even after teams lost, players were free to continue playing and substitute into other teams.
Winners on Corona FC include coach Aliou Diallo, Manuel Montero, Jonathan Martines, Luis Martinez, Samantha Beall, Omar Ismail, Orlando Aleman, Zaki Sarwary, Sam Forman, Fernando Camarena and Taryn Phillips.
The team won a Brasil CBF Ball and each of the winners received a trophy.
Mohammad El-Sahla , a De Anza men’s soccer player and representative of Team El Halween said, “There should be something like this at least every quarter to keep people interested in being a part of the De Anza community.
Many students agreed.
“It’s a yearly thing, and it’s hard to organize,” said Asbun. “But if I had more support I would definitely be interested in holding these events more often because everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.”
