According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the University of Nevada, Reno qualifies as a Division I school, which is the highest out of three division levels, making it the most stringent upon requirements for all student athletes.
In terms of athletes transferring to UNR, “it is definitely competitive,” De Anza College athletic academic adviser Matt Tropser said. Having been an adviser at De Anza for 21 years, he has only seen three student athletes transfer to UNR.
Student athletes who wish to transfer to UNR will have to meet different requirements, depending on whether or not they are a qualifier out of high school or a non-qualifier.
To qualify, students need to have taken the SAT in high school and have completed 16 core units in math, English, science and history. In addition to students’ high school academic career, students need 12 transferrable units for every full-time term enrolled at De Anza with a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average. For non-qualifiers, students must earn an AA degree in addition to the required 12 units per term, in order to be eligible.
Since UNR is a NCAA division I university, it holds UNR responsible in accommodating academic support to their student-athletes to ensure the academic progress rate is within playing requirements.
