In response to last week’s Page 4 story, “Deficit to cause cuts,” I could not help but wonder how the future will unfold for current and incoming students. Due to the unlikelihood of a tax increase, the state is focusing their strategy on taking more money out of the school budgets.
School is not just a learning institution; it is a place where faculty conduct innovative research that advances human knowledge; it is a place where students educate themselves to become more knowledgeable citizens, and most importantly, it’s a place where future business leaders and governors are trained and educated.
If the government cut off their opportunities to becoming strong intellectuals and great businessmen, what kind of future will unfold in the years to come?
With the tuition jumping by 41 percent starting this upcoming fall, more classes will be cancelled as teachers will be fired, and schools will become more competitive, even more so with the gradually increasing demand for education.
In order to get a quality and affordable education, the only thing students can do is cross their fingers and hope that tuition will not shoot up any higher before they can graduate from their universities.
