Campus center for LGBT, women resources relocates
April 18, 2016
Hate crimes and sexual harassment have affected students on campus.
The Jean Miller Resource Room for Women, Gender, and Sexuality provides a safe place for students.
The resource room, which has been on campus for two years, challenges social norms of sexuality and gender. It has found a new home in the Office of Equity, located in room 254 at the MLC building
The resource room is dedicated to LGBT rights and intersections of gender and sexuality with race, class and disability at De Anza College.
“The resource center will allow faculty and students [to receive] gender training and education,” said Director of the Jean Miller Resource Room Apryl Berney.
“Students can find a place that is inclusive with gender and sexuality.”
The resource room held an open house on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon and welcomed faculty, students and persons who were interested in learning more about the center.
“A lot of my friends are a part of the center,” said Nathan Mendoza, 22, art major. “Every person has been excited to see it finally [open].”
People within the De Anza community can visit the resource room to learn about issues affecting many women and LGBT students .
“Everyone is different within this campus,” said Tony Santa Ana, office program coordinator for the equity, social justice and multicultural education. “This will help individuals with their needs.”.
The evening event for the Jean Miller resource room was cancelled, and the rescheduling date is being determined.
