Emcees, disk jockeys, graffiti artists and B-boys and girls all came together to form what are the four elements of hip hop.
On the De Anza College campus, students who were curious or passiante about any of the elements all come together to form the 4 Elements Hip Hop Organization club.
“We aim to empower our members and the youth and to show people the positive side of hip hop,” said the club’s Interclub Council representative Matt Diaz. The club feels that mainstream media has presented hip hop negatively and wants to shatter that image, and show the community that
hip hop can also empower and push people in a positive direction.
The club gives people an outlet for expression through words, music, art and dance.
“Our meetings are always really fun, chill and relaxed,” Diaz said.
This quarter, the club has seen its largest number of interested students, with perspecitve members coming to each meeting to learn more about the four crafts.
On Nov. 18, the club had a showcase featuring its new members. The event allowed new members to show off their skills in the Main Quad and express themselves to the college through live performances and art.
“Honestly, deep down, hip hop is freedom and expression. It’s expressing yourself creatively where it’s all you, no one else. You can improve yourself and your flavor,” Diaz said.
The club invites everyone on campus to attend a 4 Elements of Hip Hop Organization meeting. Meeting times for winter quarter are Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in L81 starting Jan .21.
