For five dollars, you can have your very own student edition of "Red Wheelbarrow," De Anza’s literary magazine.
At 6:15 p.m. on June 22, student editors and contributors to the magazine will gather to celebrate the edition’s release in S32.
Student artists will display their work, and poets and authors will read selections from the magazine.
Students who submitted their work to the magazine should soon be receiving notice from "Red Wheelbarrow" editors saying whether or not their work has been accepted.
Getting this spring’s edition ready to send to the printer was an arduous process, but even after spending more than 24 hours in two days in the production lab, "Red Wheelbarrow" advisor Ken Weisner was enthusiastic about this year’s entries.
"In this year’s magazine," Wiesner stated in a letter to La Voz, "you get everything from an incredibly successful parody/update of ‘Lolita’ (Jessica Borja) to a sci-fi post-apocalyptic psychodrama from Pedro Paulo Viegas de Sa, complete with Jaguar gods and giant avenging reptiles. Talk about ambitious."
With the guidance of their advisor, a group of students evaluate student submissions each spring quarter to decide what will make the cut for the student edition.
"Red Wheelbarrow" publishes a national edition each year based on submissions received in the fall and winter.
An independent judge evaluates all "Red Wheelbarrow" submissions, and cash prizes will be awarded at the release for poetry, short stories, and art.
