De Anza students are launching an alternative textbook project called the “Book Swap Co-op,” to counter what they say is the high cost and unfair policies of the campus bookstore. The goal is to, “Start a student bookstore for the students by the students, [with] guaranteed no exploitation,” and to unify students according to DASB Senator Suluman Hyatt, who is spearheading the project.
The project will begin by seeking donations of textbooks at the ICC meetings and give them to students in the Fall for free. Currently it is networking with clubs and in the future will ask the ICC and DASB for official support. The Book Swap Co-op hopes to eventually begin selling manuals instructors sell in their classes and some textbooks.
“You buy a book for an astronomical price and sell it back for a few bucks,” said Suluman on what prompted him and others to start the project, “I hate being exploited by the bookstore.” Contact the Book Swap Co-op at [email protected] or call 864-8473.
