In direct relation to the rise in attendance at De Anza, the number of students enrolled in Calculus is much higher than it has been in recent quarters.
In a trend that is unusual when it comes to nearly any class at De Anza, half way through the quarter, Calculus classes are still nearly 100% full. This is very different from the registration numbers from the spring quarter.
According to Admissions and Records Supervisor, Barry Johnson, during the beginning of the spring quarter Calculus classes were nearly full. Midway through the quarter however, a number of students dropped the class, causing them to be roughly 60-70% full. This is typical of most classes at De Anza.
This recent trend has made it difficult for students wanting to add the class to be able to do so. Calculus student Phuong Tran said, “My class had too many people on the first day.
There were students sitting on the floor in the back of the room.” When asked about students that wished to add, Tran said, “There were a lot of people who came forward after class wanting to add, but there was not room for any of them.”
Not all hope was lost for all students, however. Rick Smith was one of the lucky ones who was able to add the class. “The first day the room was packed, but I kept going for the first week and got a spot.”
Students who wish to take Calculus are advised to sign up early next quarter in case classes are filled again.
