The Listening and Speaking Lab, located in ATC 304, offers several English as a Second Language classes every quarter. The classes, “are composed of small groups of students, about 7 students per group, creating an informal and active atmosphere, which is a change from the regular class setting,” said Maryanne Ifft, ESL instructor and part of the lab staff. This quarter 1,796 students enrolled in one of the six different ESL ½ unit classes that were offered in 19 sections. Classes meet eight times each quarter for an hour and a half per session. The most popular classes are the reading classes, where students read and discuss a novel or autobiography.
