Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Was the fight really worth $100?
May 11, 2015
Mayweather-Pacquiao promised more excitment than it delivered to all but the most discerming fans. What boxing promoters led us to believe was going to be one of the greatest fights in the history of boxing turned out to be one of the most disappointing in recent memory. Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao was downright boring.
When looking at a superfight like this, you have to consider the fact that both Pacquiao and Mayweather are masters of their craft and similarly matched in level of skill. They both respect each other’s skills far too much to start throwing wild punches, and it’s not uncommon for fights with evenly matched opponents to go down the way this one did.
The fight looked less like a boxing match and more like a game of tag. Pacquiao chased Mayweather, Mayweather ran away, Pacquiao threw some punches and Mayweather hugged him.
Mayweather seemed like he was either running away, covering up or holding Pacquiao for most of the fight. While grabbing onto your opponent might not be strictly against the rules in boxing, it certainly kills the momentum of the fight and robs viewers of the fighting they paid to see.
It would have been much more exciting if Mayweather did something other than just hugging and running. People paid to watch a fight, and hugging and running isn’t fighting.
It’s easy to blame Mayweather for running away the whole fight, but both men contributed to the overall outcome. Mayweather was being especially elusive, but Pacquiao did not throw punches with the same explosive and aggressive nature that we have seen in the past.
Mayweather’s defensive tactics didn’t make for the most exciting fight, but it was those tactics that led to his unanimous decision win over Pacquiao. It’s hard to be upset with Mayweather for doing what he had to in order to win.
For somebody with millions of dollars and a perfect professional record on the line, doing whatever it takes to win is understandable, even if that makes for a less-than-impressive fight.
The fight was hyped up so much because Mayweather and Pacquiao are incredibly talented and are two of the best of their times.
However, two talented fighters doesn’t always add up to an exciting fight.
People paid to watch what they thought was going to be the greatest fight of the century, and this fight simply didn’t live up to expectations.
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao was not worth the $100.
