With the beginning of a new quarter at De Anza college came afresh sound that reverberated throughout the main quad on a sunny afternoon on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The Interclub council welcomed the San Jose Taiko group once again to kick off welcome week.

San Jose Taiko features a multicultural fusion mix in its repertoire of Japanese style drumming.

Choreography and movement play a strong role in the performance.

“It’s not only the drum that’s the instrument, but it’s the performer’s body as well and together they make music,” said Wisa Uemura, Executive director and performer of San Jose Taiko. Technique, speed and form are essential to the art of Taiko drumming. Wisa Uemura, (center) strikes the Taiko drum.

The San Jose Taiko group tours continuously throughout the year and can be found at www. taiko.org.
