Journalism students at De Anza College won several awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges 2013 Northern California Conference held in Sacramento on Sept 21.
Former La Voz editor Michael Mannina received first place in copy editing, while current editor in chief Nathan Mitchell won third in the same category.
“I am very proud of the students,” said journalism coordinator Cecilia Deck.
De Anza journalism students from previous quarters also received awards in categories such as editorial cartoons, illustration, news photo and sports action photos.
JACC holds conferences twice a year with about 20 journalism college programs participating in contests and workshops that test their performance.
“It almost puts your skills at a different standard,” said Mannina regarding one of the tests he participated in, “It separates the novices from the pros kind of deal.”
More journalism students at De Anza are encouraged to participate at the JACC conferences whether it is in the fall or spring.
“It’s the highlight of the students’ time at La Voz,” said Deck.
