Singers show talent at Open Mic
April 21, 2014
Open to poets, rappers, singers and spoken-word artists, Welcome Week Open Mic drew mostly singers who filled the main quad with music from Queen, Bob Dylan, Imagine Dragons and an original student composition.
Slow to start, the perennial favorite “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin at the helm, was performed by 20-year-old electrical engineering major Artem Zenin.
Hakwoo Kim, 22, undecided major, gathered a crowd with his back to back acoustic performances of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” and “Blowing in the Wind.” He also performed and acoustic cover “Demons” by Imagine Dragons and an original song that he wrote called “Greetings of Another Start” as an encore.
As the event went on, more students gathered. It was obvious Artem Zenin’s spirited karaoke cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” was well recieved, since most of the audience sang along to the well-known hit.
Other performances included Electronica-backed hula-hoop tricks performed by 19-year-old intercultural studies major Adolfo De La Cruz, who is a member of the hula-hooping dance group Zer0 Motion and an acoustic cover of Thomas Rhett’s “It Goes Like This” performed by Robert Valdez, 19, music major.
Most of the performers who braved the openmic stage were nervous to various degrees, including Hakwoo Kim, who took the stage to “share the music I love.”
De La Cruz said that he felt okay and was “a little nervous.”
“It’s like practice for the real world,” said Valdez “The atmosphere is really good.”
Koosha Seyvani, 22, computer science major, and president of the DASB Senate said the goal of the open mic is to provide a platform on which students can showcase their talents or put forth any issues they may have.
