De Anza College’s AcademicSkills Center is available to studentswho need extra help withtheir classes. Students can accessthe service for free in L-47for tutoring in English, Englishas a second language,foreign language, social science,business and accounting.Help in mathematics,science, engineering andcomputer information systemsis available at S-43.
Peers tutor in L-47 andS-43, but in the Writing andReading Center, instructors’tutor along with teacher assistantsand peers. Peertutors take Learning Assistance98, a one-unit pass/nopass course required for all newgeneral subject tutors. Studentswho want to become writing tutorsmust take Learning Assistance/English Writing 97. Peertutors are paid $8 an hour. If youfeel like doing group tutoring,the pay is $10 an hour.
After twoconsecutive quarters, the pay canbe raised to $8.75 and $10.50 anhour respectively. Another perkfor students is the flexible jobschedule where students have towork ten hours a week.
There are four ways De Anzastudents can utilize the AcademicSkills Center and the tutors.Group tutoring is lead by a peertutor who has already taken theclass and that person leads thegroup. Supplemental Instructionis offered in conjunction withsome courses by arrangementwith the course instructor. Regularattendance is required forgroup tutoring but drop-ingroup tutoring is availablefor some courses.
Individual tutoring isfor students who needassistance throughout thewhole quarter and needmore one-on-one time.Students meet with theirtutor two hours a week.Online tutoring studentssubmit their questions, andspecialy trained tutors willrespond within 48 hours orless.
There is drop-in tutoring forstudents who have a brief question.A “brief” session is 30 minutes.There are also study skillsworkshops available for a varietyof other subjects.
