SHAKESPEARE IN ASHLANDEnroll in English 97 — Shakespeare in Performance — and attend the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon the week before Labor Day. The approximate cost of $800 includes bus transportation there and back, a double room and most meals at Southern Oregon University, tickets to six plays, two pre-trip class sessions, daily morning-after play discussions, a backstage tour and an “actor’s talk” with a leading member of the OSF company. TRIBUTE TO MAYNARD FERGUSONThursday, June 21, 7:30 p.m.The De Anza College Six O’Clock and Eight O’Clock “Daddios” Jazz Ensembles, directed by Steve Tyler, present a big band tribute to legendary trumpet great Maynard Ferguson. Featured artists will include former lead trumpeters with the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra, Scott Englebright and Steve Reid, as well as guest artist John Worley and trumpeter Ed Morrison. The event is $12 in advance, $15 at the door and will be held at the Fremont High School Theater, 1279 Sunnyvale-Saratoga Rd. in Sunnyvale. LATINO/LATINA STUDENT RECOGNITION CEREMONYFriday, June 22, 6-8 p.m.The 13th Annual Latino/Latina Student Recognition Ceremony will honor graduates, transfers and scholarship recipients and conclude with live entertainment and refreshments. FUSU BOOK DRIVETuesday, June 26-Friday, June 29, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.The Furendo Suppondo Club will accept textbook donations in the Campus Center near the Main Quad. Furendo Suppondo is a De Anza support club that engages in fundraisers and then routes the benefits to De Anza students. The goal is to obtain up-to-date textbooks and make them available to students for free for a whole term.
RED WHEELBARROW READING/PUBLICATION CELEBRATIONWednesday, June 27, 6-8:30 p.m.A reading and celebration will be held to commemorate the publication of the 2007 student edition of the college’s literary magazine, Red Wheelbarrow, in the Writing and Reading Center in ATC 309. Music will be provided and refreshments served as contributors will read from or discuss their work. Issues of Red Wheelbarrow will be on sale for an introductory price of $5.
GRADUATIONSaturday, June 30, 9 a.m.The 2007 commencement ceremony will be held in the Outdoor Events Area by the south entrance to campus. This is De Anza’s 40th annual commencement. Guests should arrive early and be prepared for hot weather by bringing sunscreen, a hat or umbrella and water. Parking is free. A reception with refreshments will follow the ceremony.
