Head water polo coach Art Lambert is looking on his first season as a junior college water polo coach optimistically. “I only had eight men come out for the team who were eligible to play,” explained the United States Olympic water polo coach. This means that things could get pretty tough for the Dons’ tank team if some of the players are injured or foul out in a game. With a bench strength of one player, Coach Lambert can only hope his players can stay healthy.
A quick look around the league shows that many people will not be looking for the Coast Conference’s newest members to be any threat to their security. Since this is Coach Lambert’s first year in junior college water polo, he only knows what people have told him about the other teams in the league. He has, although, picked West Valley as one of the teams to beat because it has received all of Buchser High School’s top water poloists, who took second place in the SCVAL last year.
COACH LAMBERT feels the Golden Gate Conference will be stronger than the Coast Conference this season, mainly on the strength of the San Mateo and Foothill tank teams. Foothill will be the target of De Anza on a later date in the season. Foothill always has a fine team and has dominated water polo in this area for the past few years.
The team’s next home meet will be against Santa Ana on Oct. 6 at 3:30. The following players will be representing De Anza against Santa Ana: Jim Wietens, Rick Foreman, Lance Dilloway, Mark Evans, Dave Vickerman, Mike Wright, Dennis Bedford and Bryan Pugh.
