De Anza needs more free water on campus, more school resources and easier access to counselors.
The De Anza Student Government manages a million-dollar budget and prides itself as being the voice for student rights and service needs; it should bring attention to these three issues so the college administration can bring quick action to them.
Easier access to counseling
For the longest time, I had difficulty finding a counselor that was right for me. There are many different counselors and at times it was overwhelming trying to find one that fit what I needed.
There were times when the counseling appointment website would not accept my student ID because the counselor didn’t fit my registration status, even though the school website directed me to them.
I had gotten to a point where finding a counselor became so difficult I deferred to emailing counselors directly instead of using the portal.
A way to fix this could be providing all the counselors on a single webpage including their specific programs, rather than the counselors scattered around the college website.
Better advertising of campus resources
I have been a student at De Anza since fall 2023, and now that it is my final year at De Anza I am just finding out about resources such as The Hub, student housing at the McClellan Terrace complex, free mental health counseling and emergency cash grants.
I am fortunate to be in a situation where these resources aren’t something I need in order to succeed in my education. However, I know there are many students who could really use the information in all the resources De Anza provides to take care of the students.
I found out about most of these resources through peers. I never saw any webpage or flyer for any of these resources.
I think De Anza does a really good job at giving resources to students to help them through college, but needs to do better at sharing and promoting them.
More advertising on Instagram and Tik Tok would be good.
The website does provide a section, however it is easy to overlook because it is a small link you have to search for through the site.
More water fountains, bottle-filling stations
There have been many instances where I was thirsty in class and either forgot my water bottle or needed to fill it up.
Off the top of my head, I can think of only two stations where I can refill my water bottle and both are located in the ATC building and cafeteria.
It is a bit odd that a campus with such a large population lacks water bottle filling stations and water fountains on campus.
Now is a great time for our new DASG student government members to make changes and bring awareness to these issues on campus to help give students an easier time in the stressful college environment.
