MEChA plans to host radical audio/visual experience for charity

De Anza club is planning a warehouse party to fundraise money for one needy student

De Anza College’s Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán club is throwing a charity dance on June 11 to raise money for a selected undocumented student.

The event will be held in a warehouse in San Jose that the club has rented from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

    Tickets will cost $10.

“There will be graffiti and body painting,” said organizer Jebel Capito. “We’re planning on having multiple DJs, and a few other activities. It’s not your typical club scene event.”

MEChA is reluctant to call the party a rave, a type of party that has caught some recent controversy due to the death of 23-year-old De Anza student Anthony Mata, who attended a Daly City rave called POP 2010 at the Cow Palace.

“[The rave scene] is actually just our theme. All of our DJs are very diverse in what music they play. It’s not all going to be techno. There will be house, pop, hip-hop and reggae. It’s not just going to be a rave, it will be everything,” said Capito. “We’re kind of reluctant to use that term because at most raves, people are on ecstasy and other things, and that’s not what this event is about at all.”

“We created an application for a financial aid award to help one needy student to help them pay for college. There’s going to be a process where they submit an application, including an essay, and then it will be evaluated by an alumni of the Latino/a Empowerment At De Anza club and faculty members,” said organizer Kris Garcia-Mason.

“They should be an AB540 student, and someone who has at least gone to a California high school for three years, and also someone who has been involved in some kind of social justice or civil engagement with a high stress on community service,” said Capito.

MEChA hopes to award the student with a $1,000 grant. The club has already collected $700 from De Anza staff and faculty donations and hopes to raise another $300 from the party, said former LEAD President Claudia Flores.

The club will be selling tickets next week up until the event, both in the Main Quad and individually.

The club organizers warn that those who are seen with alcohol or illegal substances at the event will be removed immediately.
