DASB president Custodio suspended till March 26

De Anza Associated Student Body President Marlo Custodio has taken a leave of absence as a result of disciplinary action taken against him for his behavior at the Student Senate for Community Colleges conference in November 2009.

The conference’s administrators reprimanded Custodio for consuming alcohol with an unnamed group of students at the conference, violating the mandatory contract requiring all students, regardless of age, to abstain from drugs or alcohol during the conference.

The student Senate granted Custodio a leave in favor of Custodio’s resignation, which won in a vote by a majority of senators and representatives in a DASB meeting held on Feb. 10 in the Hinson Center.

Mo Shirazzi, former vice president of Student Rights and Campus Relations chose to resign from his position based on the outcome of the vote and said, “The Senate should use more standards and judgment for leaves of absence. Where do you draw the line?” Directly following the vote, Shirazzi abruptly left the meeting, declaring his resignation.

In deliberation, Vice President of Marketing and Communications John Yan publicly questioned Custodio’s ability to fulfill his responsibilities upon his return to his position.

Custodio has appointed Bobo Teo to fill his position during his leave from Feb. 10 to March 26, but plans to stay involved with the Institute of Community and Civic Engagement throughout his absence.
