DASB deliberates funding votes, consensus not final

Programs continue to fight for funds as student senate debates budget

The De Anza Associated Student Body second vote regarding budget allocation was held in the Senate Council Chambers last Wednesday. The Senate amended the motions passed in the first vote, as well as suggested new propositions.

On the second vote, allocations go into effect.

However if the senate proposes and passes any new amendments during this meeting, the process must be repeated until the senate reaches a general consensus.

The Cross Cultural Partners program requested $7,500 instead of the original $26,415 for 2010-2011. The $7,500 is essential in order for the CCP to stay operational. According to Faculty Adviser Webb Hamilton, the CCP will only be able to function for two to three more quarters. The DASB did not grant the CCP any of their requested funding.

“The CCP is not just another club,” said Hamilton. “The CCP strives to create relationships between cross-cultural students by improving communication between non-English speakers.”

According to Alex Giardino, program coordinator of the Honors Program, there is no additional money to be found on campus and the Honors Program will have absolutely no funding next year, thus closing the program. The Honors Program requested $23,500 from the DASB but also did not receive any funding.

“The first programs that are cut on a federal level are the arts,” said Cain Ramirez, a music composition major and student of the Honors Program. He will be unable to transfer at a junior level if the Chorale and Vintage Singers Ensemble’s funding is revoked by the DASB.

By cutting from previously allocated funds, like the DASB senate orientation fund, DASB telephone funds and the college front office assistant fund, they managed to recollect a new surplus of $4,950.

Prior to the budget’s final decision, Wayne Robert Spaulding, the newly appointed DASB Vice President of Administration, suggested allocating an additional $2,650 to La Voz Weekly, which would have brought the fund to $2,500 under the $29,000 originally requested at the beginning of the fiscal year. The motion failed, and La Voz Weekly received $21,000 for printing.

After deliberation, the DASB voted to allocate $2,650 to the Tutorial and Academic Center, $500 to Women’s Badminton and $1,800 to the Math Performance Success Program. The DASB funding for the MPSP must be used only for student employees.

The budget was approved in an 18-3 majority vote favoring the approval of the budget as amended.

If additional motions by senators to modify the budget are passed, then deliberations on how to spend funds from the budget will continue.

According to DASB bylaws, all budget-related items need a two-thirds majority, and this vote must be finalized by the end of March.
