Standing 6 feet 5, sophomore guard-forward Theo McDowell (De Anza No. 24), 19, business major, brings both size and leadership to the Mountain Lions’ basketball roster. McDowell talks about his season goals, game-day routine and the confidence driving him and his teammates.
La Voz: What are your feelings going into this season this year as a sophomore?
Theo McDowell: I’m really confident in this team, I think we’re going to be really good. I know a lot of people were talking about us and pre-season everyone was surprised how good we became. I really think we’re going to shock a lot of people. I think we’re a lot better than last year. I think we’re going to be really good this year.
La Voz: What is your biggest goal this season as an individual player?
Theo McDowell: My goal is to become a better leader for the team. I’ve been there, I’ve competed. I did my scoring last year but now I want to lead us and make sure that everyone on the team feels included and that we just all come together as one team. That’s one of my main goals this season.
La Voz: How do you connect with your teammates that are younger than you?
Theo McDowell: When all the new freshmen came in we kind of just brought them into the family. If you were to ask them, they’d definitely feel like this is one of the best programs you could be in, I truly believe it.
La Voz: Are there any players whether they are college or NBA that you model your game or your playing style after?
Theo McDowell: Luka Doncic of the Lakers. That’s one of my favorite players.
La Voz: As an individual do you have a specific preparation?
Theo McDowell: I’m very superstitious when I play. I kind of eat the same food at the same time. I do the same routine. I like to meditate. I like to just clear my mind and make sure and be confident going into the game and tell myself I’m the best player on the court and I’m a leader.
La Voz: Who do you think will go to the NBA Finals this year?
Theo McDowell: I think it’s going to be a rematch.
