Relentless danger, the constant struggle to survive, and a new face from last season’s finale return in the third season of AMC’s hugely popular show “The Walking Dead.”
Last season’s finale shattered ratings records for basic cable with 9 million viewers, according to Hollywood Insider.
“The Walking Dead” Season 3 was anticipated by the show’s legions of “undead” fans, with the Internet abuzz in speculation and spoilers.
Last season’s finale introduced the most badass character in recent T.V. history. Michonne will be a huge part of Season 3, and viewers can expect more from the katana wielding character with two pet zombies on chains.
In a Q-and-A from a press kit courtesy of AMC TV, actress Danai Gurira speaks about what drives her character.
“Michonne is beyond a survivor, she’s a thriver. She’s transformed and recreated herself to respond to the world she’s in. She wants to be on top of the situation. She wants to be 10 paces ahead of it.
For the fans worried if Michonne will lose her edge from comic book to screen, “The Walking Dead” executive producer and writer Robert Kirkland has reassuring words.
“Michonne is translated on to screen pretty faithfully,” Kirkland said. “Danai is doing a phenomenal job as the character. We haven’t toned her down for television.”
The show’s biggest stars, the walkers, will have some nice upgrades to their nastiness in Season 3 as well. Greg Nicotero, co-executive producer, special effects makeup supervisor, gushes on the zombie works AMC has in store.
“One thing that I wanted to allow for in Season 3 was rotted chests and rotted backs.” said Nicotero. “One of the ideas we like playing up was that the walkers, because they are rotting and decomposed, is they’re sort of putrefying. If you come in contact with any of them and you slash at them, parts of them might sort of liquefy and come off.”
But if you think that’s all, Nicotero adds, “We’re keeping the audience guessing. Everytime you think you know how we did something, we’re going to throw something else at you.”
“The Walking Dead” Season 3 will have 16 new episodes. Episode 1, “Seed”, premiered Oct. 14 on AMC TV.
