    TIP OF THE WEEK

    Getting a job or internship

Resume. Resume. Resume. Have an updated resume ready to send in if responding to an ad on a job search site. If you’re fortunate enough to get an interview, bring extra copies. Sites like theresumebuilder.com are available to help create a professional resume. Note: Make sure you list relevant work experience. If you don’t have any work experience, consider any extra-curricular activities you’re involved in that may apply.

Do your research. Find out background information about the company you’re interested in interning with. Look at its history, its core values and anything that can help you zero in on the type of employee they may be looking for.

Think of potential interview questions. Interviews can be daunting, but if you’ve already thought about typical questions your interviewer may ask you, then you’ve already started to prepare yourself for the big day. Take a look at http://career.vt.edu/Interviewing/TypicalQuestions.html for tips on how to prepare answers for interviews.

Dress to impress. First impressions are important. Dress for the job or internship that you are applying for. Putting effort into your appearance for an interview says a lot about your character. Choose an outfit that says you’re taking the interview seriously.

Be early for your interview. Obviously, you shouldn’t be late. Punctuality is important and goes along with giving that great first impression. You don’t have to be super early, but 10-15 minutes early shows that you’re ready and serious about the position.
