The Ohlone Renegades beat De Anza College’s women’s basketball team 56-45 in a conference game at De Anza on Jan. 22.
Despite De Anza’s strong efforts in the second period, Ohlone College walked away 5-0 with their fourth consecutive win this season.
The Dons were expected to “play hard, play with energy and fire,” said De Anza assistant coach Ali Lopez. The De Anza players did just that. Midway in the second period, Anecia Jones made two free throws to tie the game 41-41.
There was no lack of energy in the first period either. Rachael Santos, who has a near 80 percentage free throw, landed the Dons two much needed points at the end of the first period.
Ohlone’s strategy consisted of eliminating the “big kids” as threats and “going up early, that’s what we always shoot for,” said Ohlone head coach Julia Allender.
Overall, the response from De Anza was inconsistent. The Dons had a hard time executing the offense and as a result from the foul numerous times at the end of the game. “When you get that close, and it ends the way it did, that’s disappointing,” said Lopez.
“We just didn’t attack the way we should have,” said Santos.
The reaction from Ohlone was more optimistic, “There was a lot of scrappin’ but we came out with the W,” said Krysta Lagander.
The next game between Ohlone and De Anza will be on Feb. 17 in Fremont at 7:30 p.m.
