Where to spend your hang time

Whether you’re bored, hungry, stressed out or all three, there are some places on and off campus that students go to kill time between classes. Here are some of their favorites:

Coffee Society is a coffee house on the other side of Stevens Creek Blvd. located in the Oaks shopping center. Its crowd varies from well paid white-collar workers to young and starving students. It showcases artwork by local artists, many of whom attend De Anza. And yeah, the coffee is not bad.

Many students enjoy Whole Foods Market, where the shopping experience comes alive with sights and sounds, smells, and activity. It’s where hippies and yuppies alike purchase natural and organic goods ranging from pet care to deli style sandwiches. But don’t forget your yuppie food coupons. You know those twenty-dollar bills from the ATM machine. You can find the nearest Whole Foods a couple of blocks east of De Anza College on Stevens Creek Blvd.

You can find Le Cafe at the bottom level of the Hinson Campus Center near the Council Chambers. You may need to grab some munchies after attending a DASB or ICC meeting at the nearby Student Council Chambers. Le Cafe offers coffee, juices, biscotti, cookies and muffins among other snacks.

Like Le Cafe, any of the fountains can provide a relaxing environment for students who want to retreat from the hustle and bustle of collegiate life. The three prominent ones are located in the L-Quad, the bastion of the language arts crowd on the east side of campus, the Main Quad, which you’ve no doubt passed through during registration, and the dramatically named Sunken Gardens (I call it the Sunken Asphalt) just west of the cafeteria.

Other places to pass time between classes include:

Vallco Shopping Center, the typical city of generica is found on the intersection of Wolfe Rd. and Stevens Creek Blvd. It’s that place with fast food joints, and clothing stores galore. My friend who used to live around there said, “It used to be a good place, but it’s gone to pot. At least they have Fresh Choice.”

Clarke’s Charbroiled Burgers, a locally owned burger joint is east of campus on Stevens Creek just past The Wherehouse.

And if you still have the munchies, Pizza Hut is a little further down the street right next to Whole Foods Market.
