Meet Your Senate Day revamped

colorful posters, pies to the face draw crowds

Last Wednesday, the De Anza Associated Student Body Senate held its quarterly “Meet Your Senate Day” event outside in the patio of the Hinson Campus Center on the Freedom stage.

This year’s DASB Senate made changes to previous years’ “Meet Your Senate Day” events including location, audience particpation and music.

The event is normally held inside in the Student Council Chambers, but this year’s Diversity and Events committee decided to host the event outside.

“This year we thought we should really go out to the students; it’s our job to go out to them,” said Senator Mariam Azhar, vice chair of the Diversity and Events committee.

“A purpose of the event is to get more people involved in the DASB and help build students’ leadership skills,” said Senator Sana Kathuria, a member of the Marketing committee.

Decorated boards for each Senate committee lined the stage, displaying information about each one to share with students.

“Some people are aware the Senate exists, but most don’t really know the logistics behind it,” said Azhar.

Committees’ boards drew curiousity from students interested in the Senate’s work and events.

“I learned a lot about my senate today,” said student Josephine Eggman, 20.

To help involve students in the event, a “Wheel of Fortune” was used to encourage students to participate.

Prizes on the wheel included candy, hugs from senators and a chance to “pie” a senator in the face.

“I definitely didn’t expect people to be so responsive and enthusiastic,” said emcee senator of the event

Pamela Jara-Arancibia, a member of the

Students Rights and Services committee.

“It’s what we aim for for every event. It was cool to see people respond to everything that we’re about,” said Jara-Arancibia.
