Restroom constructions in the L5, S2 and S6 buildings have extended beyond its originally-announced April completion.
Cici Ramirez, administrative assistant of College Operations said completion may finalize by July.
The Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees gave Giant Construction Inc. a $2.5 million contract at last year’s July 7 meeting.
It added more than $150,000 on April 6 for further renovations, atop a previously approved $137,000.
Tyler Kintz, the Giant construction manager, declined to comment on the project timeline after multiple attempts to interview.
“I don’t speak with reporters,” Kintz said.
The increase totals 10.47% of the original contract’s value. The district decided not to bid to another contractor despite The Public Contract Code’s requirements for increases over 10%.
“Competitive bidding would delay the project’s completion and cause coordination issues with multiple contractors on site,” the agenda item read. “It would not benefit the district, as the work can be more efficiently performed by one contractor.”
The extra amount was needed because of “unforeseen” issues and “architect-initiated modifications” to the three buildings such as rerouting and replacing piping, water lines and rainwater leaders.
“If I was in the L quad, that would feel terrible for me as a student to rush to class,” Ung Hei, 20, computer engineering major said.
Some students find it inconvenient to walk from the L quad to the nearest bathrooms in the Hinson Campus Center and the Advance Technology Center.
“It has been taking way too long for the bathrooms to get renovated,” Johnson Lee, 18, civil engineering major said. “It’s not fair. It is such an important utility for students and it should be done a lot faster.”
