DASB approves $25,080 budget for June Baylands Festival

DASB Senate approved $25,080 towards this year’s Baylands Festival on Feb. 18.
The objective of the upcoming festival is inform the De Anza college community about environmental issues and solutions, while having a
good time.
The festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 13 in the Sunken Garden. All profits go towards the Environmental Sustainability Committee’s bike program as well as DASB revenue for campus events.
DASB Senate president Julia Malakiman suggested the budget be raised to $25,080. With an estimated 3,000 people attending the event, security in  be needed. Out of the budget, $13,000 would be used for security.
Malakiman said her vision is that Baylands Festival will change the way community colleges are viewed throughout the Bay Area.
“We want this event to be sustainable,” Malakiman said.
Malakiman said the event could potentially become an annual festival on campus.
The Baylands Festival will have food trucks and live music. This year’s festival features Los Rakas and local vendors. De Anza clubs would be able to set up tables to promote their clubs and local businesses who are sponsoring the Baylands festival will be able to promote their services.
Senators opposing the extra funding of the event said the extra funds could be used in a more charitable way rather than on a festival.
This topic was scheduled only to take 30 minutes, but time was extended because of the back-and-forth commentary. Senators voted 16-7 in favor of increasing the budget.
