The De Anza College baseball team pulled off its season’s first 3-game series sweep against the City College of San Francisco Rams, sealing it 2-0 on Friday, April 10 at home.
Over the previous two games, the Mountain Lions scored 30 points against the Rams’ 11 with a 20-4 landslide on Tuesday, April 7 and a close 10-7 win on Thursday, April 9.
Infielder RJ Argel, 18, nursing major (De Anza No. 1) said the team’s excellent pitching and groundwork lit this game up.
“We excelled in our defense,” Argel said. “Hunter (Lawrie) pitched really well today; he hit all the spots.”
Lawrie, 19, business major (De Anza No. 25) and pitcher, pitched the first eight innings of the shutout game.
“I had to lock in and get it done,” Lawrie said.
Early on, the Mountain Lions ran quick innings and played safe, with both teams only letting one runner reach a plate during the first four innings.

The game was at a stalemate until the fourth inning, where infielder Lawson Darthard, 19, business major (De Anza No. 40), going 2-2 with a runner at second, hit a thunderous home run toward centerfield and scored the game’s only two points.
“Just stay simple and try to drive the run,” Darthard said.
The Rams tried to claw their way back with multiple hits and bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings, failing to score each time.
The ninth inning saw pitcher Tommy Castro (De Anza No. 20), 19, business major, close the game.
“Tommy came in and shut it down,” infielder Colin Williams, 20, kinesiology major, (De Anza No. 13) said.
This victory marks the ninth of the season, totaling a 9-26 record and a 6-9 conference record.
The team hopes to extend its win streak to four games with a rematch against the 26-9 Skyline College Trojans on Tuesday, April 14.
“We already beat them once,” Williams said. “They’re a very good team right now. Hopefully, we can play our game and win.”
