The De Anza College Women’s Soccer team fell to Skyline College 3-1 on Friday Sept. 25.

The Dons jumped to an early lead within the first 20 minutes when midfielder Heidy Robledo scored a goal with an assist from defender Celena Vasquez.

After De Anza scored the first goal, Skyline took over.

“We started off well, scored a goal early, and then we kind of thought we got this,” Head coach Cheryl Owiesny said. “There was still 70 minutes to play.”

The Dons cleared the ball off the line a few times, but Skyline tied the game 40 minutes in.

The Dons went into the half tied 1-1.

When the second half began, De Anza could not maintain possession and had many giveaways.

“We did not take care of the ball, we gave them (Skyline) their opportunities and they capitalized, and that’s what we can’t do,” Owiesny said.

Skyline scored twice early in the second half, with both scores coming within six minutes of each other.

At 71 minutes, Britney Vela, striker, received an opportunity to close the gap and shot the ball at the goalkeeper.

The Dons came with pressure late in the second half, but their efforts fell short.

De Anza showed glimpses of good possession, but ultimately was outplayed by Skyline

Cheryl Owiesny said she still believes her team can go the distance.

“I still have confidence we can achieve our goal of winning conference,” Owiesny said.
