Volunteers and members of the jean Miller Resource Room offer shoes, clothes and accessories for trade at a clothing swap in the Sunken garden on Tuesday, Oct.7.

The Jean Miller Resource Room welcomed De Anza students with savory treats and reusable clothes for trade during their Clothing Swap on Oct. 7.

The event kicked off in Sunken Garden, where three volunteers hung clothes and accessories under the shade of awnings.

“Although, I am doing it for extra credit, I am having fun nevertheless!” said Mia Montanez, a volunteer for the event.

Students brought their clothing that cluttered their closets to swap for clothing that was equal in value and condition to theirs, and could try the clothes on with the convenience of the gender neutral restrooms nearby in the East Cottage.

According to the Jean Resource Room’s flyer, the event was held with a universal message of tolerance at the Clothing Swap.

Then Waradah Shere, communications major, said, “I think it is a good cause for everyone.”

April Burney, director of the Jean Miller said that the Jean Miller Resource Room  is hopeful that the event will shed light on the ignorance and intolerance that many students face on campus and in their community struggling for an environment that is inclusive and accepting of their gender and sexuality.

Burney said, “It is our first clothing swap, but we would like it  to follow up with another one soon.”
