Both De Anza College tennis teams are starting the season with hopes and a lot of motivation.
Head coach Ron Ward said he is excited about both the men’s and women’s tennis teams this year.
Regarding men’s tennis, Ward said, “We’ll finish probably second in the conference and go to playoffs.”
Though there are many players who are new to the team, Ward is optimistic.
“We’ve got a few players that have a lot of experience and I think that individually we’re gonna have some good results,” Ward said.
“They’re young and its their first year, you know, that’s the only downfall to it so it depends on how fast they really come along,” Ward said. “We’ve got a few players that have a lot of experience and I think that individually we’re gonna have some good results.”
Ward has even higher expectations for the women’s tennis team this year.
“I think we have a shot to actually win the state,” he said.
His hopes mainly come from the team’s top player.
“Our number one player I think will win the state.”
Though winning the state is difficult, Ward thinks it’s possible.
“We’ve gotten to the finals in previous years, and in my five years I have had a player who won the state for the women so I know the level pretty well,” Ward said.
Ward said he is excited about what this year’s top player has to offer. “She’s already beaten some of our best players easily.”
“We only got the program back late in the summer, early fall last year” he said.
“They dropped the program because of funding and we got it back by fundraising primarily,” he said.
Ward said he foresees a great men’s and women’s tennis season for De Anza this year.
