Simple ways to stay safe around campus

You may be actively avoiding the notorious freshman 15, looking for exercise alternatives to pressing the next button on Netflix’s new season of “Daredevil” and thinking of creative ways to squeeze fitness into a busy schedule.

Staying active may be at the bottom of your to-do list under midterms, due dates and social media feeds that continue to pile up, but dedicating 30 to 60 minutes three to four days a week to exercise and choosing eco-friendly options like walking or biking are easy ways to stay fit without any additional planning.

De Anza College also offers a variety of physical education courses on campus. Body sculpting, introductory tennis and swimming are available to burn off extra calories during the school day.

De Anza’s track and field is open to students and the public from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays for those who enjoy running and circuit training.

When looking for fun ways to incorporate exercise into a lively social life; try out dating in ways that break a sweat. Bored of typical movie and dinner dates? Hit the hiking trail, bowling alley or challenge your date to something new.

“We usually do bets and… like, if you don’t do this then you have to do five push ups,” Kristallyne Rullama, communications major, said. “He’s more active than me and does track, so being active together helps me understand him more.”

The Lifetime and Wellness Center, located in the physical education quad, is complete with weight and cardio machines offered quarterly for students looking for alternative exercise options like yoga and weight lifting.

“I’m taking a strength development class this quarter, “ said Orlind Abravio, biological science major. “It’s a good way to stay committed to lifting”

Taking VTA buses with De Anza’s Eco-pass, biking and skateboarding, and parking far from campus are simple transportation methods to incorporate into an everyday routine.

Integrating activities that don’t feel like grueling exercise will help you stay fit while decreasing stress during the remaining weeks of the quarter. Hit the track, ride a bike, or go on an active adventure around the Bay Area with a friend.
