The case for buying a Powerball ticket: Why not?

Carlos Velazquez, Staff Writer

Waiting in line for 20 minutes for anything can cause considerable irritation, especially if you spent your precious time in a 7-11 last week, defying the odds and buying a Powerball ticket.

But you walk up and order your tickets for one of the biggest amounts of money ever to be offered in the history of the lottery. Never mind that I got confused for a minor twice in one conversation with the clerk, and almost not allowed to buy my three tickets, I was more than psyched.

But after I saw the register, which displayed the total ticket sales for the day, a grand total of $892.00, the realization suddenly dawned on me: there’s no way I’m going to win this.

So, I looked up my odds of winning the grand purse. One in 292 million. Those are the odds stacked against all of us attempting to win the absurd amount of money, $1.5 billion to be exact, for the Powerball lottery.

You have a higher chance of being attacked by a mountain lion, suffering a sudden case of shark attack or any other oddball affliction. But morbid details aside, what if you actually did draw the lucky numbers?

But with all the talk of “what if’s” and what you would do with such a huge sum of cash, is it really worth going out of your way to buy a ticket (and get confused with someone who legally is prohibited to purchase alcohol, such as my case)?

My answer is yes. The worth of a single ticket obviously outweighs the amount to be earned, but it also doesn’t hurt to have a little fun. Just looking back at the day you bought the ticket worth a couple islands off in Dubai and laughing about it, sounds like a warm memory; if you won and bought said islands.

It never hurts to daydream, right? I mean, with $1.4 billion dollars you can buy the Buffalo Bills, which is a football team that I just found out about, and you’d still have some money to spare.

Whether you would spend 1.5 billion big ones to donate to various charitable organizations or buy some luxury goods, the thought of striking rich is certainly enticing.
But alas, as expected, I did not win. But the few seconds of daydreaming were worth the gamble.
