COMPETITION TIME – De Anza scholar athlete Derek White preparing to throw the discus during competition. White’s throw, of just under 172 feet, held up for him to win the state title in the event, and to become only the third male in De Anza history to win the honor.

Derek White won first place in the California community college discus state championships, where competing colleges met after passing three rounds of qualifying competitions. The event was held at the American River College in Sacramento on May 20 and 21.

Eight years have passed since any De Anza College athlete has won a state title; the last victory was by a female athlete in 2003. White is only the third man in De Anza College’s history to win a state title. Two previous titles were won in 1986 and 1971. White entered the competition ranked third in the state, but advanced over athletes through the course of the year. “The team was very supportive, our team was really good,” White said.

Coach Nick Mattis praised White for his character and leadership. “He was a great leader on the track and field team, and the whole team has been routing for him to get his goal all season, Coach Mattis said.

Derek’s strongest discus throw was his second out of a total of six. Of his win, Derek said, “I was completely overjoyed!” No one worked harder or stayed focused more on being a champion more than Derek, Coach Mattis said.

The victory is another steppingstone pushing White to reach for even more, White said. Derek is studying kinesiology and will soon find out if he got accepted at University of California, Berkeley, where he hopes to transfer. His goal is a master’s degree in physical education. Derek also finished with a spot in 7th place for all-state honors in the hammer throw in the same event.
