De Anza College’s RAW People Club is petitioning for a juicer to add to the Hinson Campus Center to give students the option of freshly squeezed orange juice. Fresh squeezed orange juice would be a healthy alternative to the coffee, soda and sugary drinks sold there.

“We are doing this to change and assist in helping students eat healthier. Drinks are portable and should be natural … We want to get students back to the idea of real food and drinks,” said president of RAW People Jasmine Mithani.

The club is trying to get a farm to table feel on campus. They may look into a local farmers market to obtain a variety of fresh fruits, but to start things off, their choice for  fruit will be oranges. This will be the first step to help students rely less on factories to create drinks.

In order to fund this project, the club has used raffle tickets and donations.

“We were able to raise enough money for the juicer and are just waiting for the permission to get it,” said Mithani.

After speaking with students, the club found that they are willing to pay the approximately three dollars for fresh drinks.

Obtaining the juicer is the main objective for the club, as they are in a transition period. After elections, the juicer plan will proceed into later stages. At its current stage, the club has the funding but needs permission to proceed with the proposed plan.

People who want to support the cause can attend the RAW People Club meetings Tuesdays from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Multicultural Center.
