Mctate McKanna Stroman II’s son Chris Stroman plays DJ at the First Thursday event.

It’s back and strong for another quarter. With aspiring artists, inspiring audiences and a welcoming “family-like” communal atmosphere, First Thursday is the event to attend for those hoping to become performers, express themselves or showcase their art whether it be through poetry, dance or song.

This event held on the first Thursday of every month (hence the name) at De Anza College’s Euphrat Museum has been going on for about two years, thanks to Black Student Union adviser McTate Mckanna Stroman II, student trustee Thomasina Russaw and active members of the Black Student Union. The April 7 event kicked off with inspiring poetry by McTate, upbeat and vibrant rapping by stage name Society and some touching poems by former De Anza Associated Student Body President Marlo Custodio.

“This is for the students who wish to express themselves in any art form, from poetry to dance, they are welcome and free to showcase their work … We focus on the community to come and perform as well as De Anza students,” Russaw said.

To spread the word about his new album, JohnnyD 18, his stage name, came to perform. As a senior at nearby Homestead High School who heard about the event, he said it was a great opportunity to showcase his work.

Upon entering the Euphrat, audience members immediately noticed the friendly and welcoming atmosphere; attendees encouraged others to step up and show their work.

This is definitely the place where aspiring artists who are looking for exposure need to be. Spectators will not be disappointed: the passion of art shines through.
