An awards ceremony was held on Tuesday, June 11 at the Television Center to commemorate the achievements of the top five community colleges in the US and was televised on De Anza College’s Channel 3. De Anza President A. Robert DeHart accepted the award and deemed it the most notable one out of all the awards the college has received in his 18 years in office.The top five colleges were selected by a 12 person commission consisting of faculty from 4 year colleges and graduate schools. University of Texas educators John Rouche and George Beher headed the commission and prided De Anza College on its continued excellence in education despite budget limitations imposed by the recently passed Proposition 13.De Anza College was selected out of 1,219 colleges at the time. The selection commission chose 70 colleges out of the total for further evaluation, then narrowed that number down to 34. From the 34 remaining colleges, De Anza College, along with Miami-Dade Community College, Jefferson Community College, Lane Community College, and Central Piedmont Community College were selected as the finalists.At the time of the award, De Anza College had around 23,644 students enrolled, making it one of the largest community colleges in California by enrollment number.
