De Anza sports industry at Club Day

The energy is electric. The smells of freshly cut grass, and fresh-off-the-grill hotdogs fill the air. Crack! The ball is smashed to deep center, and the crowd explodes.

Sports can excite us, intrigue us, and unite us, the connection of people provides its most valuable attribute.

De Anza now offers a club that serves this need.

Sport Industry enter, or “S. enter” as they like to be called, was created by a group of students last quarter, and offers a platform for exploration into the sports industry, as well as expanding social networks.

President Suneui Kim’s vision for a sports club focuses on more than just the play on the field.

“We analyze real, practical issues,” said Kim. “We try to learn the how front offices of teams work, and try to understand their marketing strategy.”

The club aims to appeal to a much wider audience as opposed to other sports clubs.

With 15-20 members currently involved, the club has begun to expand after just a couple months of existence.

They recently formed a mini parternship with similar clubs from UC Davis and UCLA, with the idea of adapting their activies to the activities of these university clubs.

The UCLA club was able to arrange dinner with Mitch Kupchek, the general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers. This is the kind of activity that Kim and rest of the board of S. enter would like to provide their members.

Facility tours, guest speakers and special events are also all part of the membership.

“Last quarter, we all went to a Warriors game at Oracle arena,” Kim said. “The game wasn’t sold out, and the Warriors lost by a lot, but I was very impressed with their marketing scheme.”

After the game, topics such as game marketing and front office activity were discussed, Kim said. The club also hopes to invite a member of the San Francisco Giants’ front office to come speak at a meeting this quarter, and Kim said he is already in contact with the team.

After focusing on deep research of the sports industry, the focus shifted this quarter to a more social environment.

“Our goal this quarter has been modified,” Kim said. “We want to expand our members’ social network based on the sports industry. If they can get contacts from teams, and insight on how the industry is run, that would be great.”
