Students deliberately skipped classes making a big commotion, screaming and yelling while holding up large signs that most likely disturbed near-by classes in session – and it’s about time! The Students for Justice club, Muslim Student Association and the college’s Office of Community and Civic Engagement organized a student walk-out on Tuesday, marching from the MMC buildings to the main quad on the De Anza campus. Their numbers were not extremely impressive. About 100 students and staff showed up and even more watched, but those people gave something most don’t these days – they gave a damn. These days, it’s easy to get lost in a world of fantasy through television or get entranced in an ocean full of music from an iPod. No one cares about anything anymore. We have become the “me, myself and I” generation, letting the world go by unaware of the consequences we may have to confront from the choices and actions of our leaders today. We as a community have become like the machines we use – we just sit there. It’s only when something directly happens to us, do we actually use the legs we were born with to do something about it. Others just sit there turning the pages of their life, hoping nothing happens. They avoid the conflict altogether thinking other people will do something about it for them. They keep flipping through these pages until they get to the last chapter. By then it’s too late. The demonstrators wanted to end immigration raids, racial profiling and U.S. Imperialism. Regardless of which political party, religion or association the students and staff may belong to, they did it to show that they more than care. Anything to inform the public of the current events taking place was better than nothing. I don’t think De Anza has enough demonstrations. It’s one thing to care about something and it’s another to go out and change the world for the better. Caring isn’t enough.Feelings can’t transform the earth, but it can help provoke the actions – it speaks louder.
