The board of trustees forFoothill-De Anza CommunityCollege district has selectedJudy Miner, De Anza’s vicepresident of instruction, tobecome the next President ofFoothill College. She will takethe position starting July 1.
Recommended by DistrictChancellor Martha Kanter, the board selected Miner froma list of 50 applicants fromaround the country. When itcame down to the final three,Miner said that it was a verytense moment, but that shereally wanted the position.
“My experiences preparedme very well to take on thechallenges of presidency,”Miner said.
Her 19 year record with DeAnza gave her the familiaritywith staff and faculty whosupported her taking thisposition.
According to the FoothillWeb site, Board President HalPlotkin said, “We are all thrilledthat Dr. Judy Miner has agreedto become the next presidentof Foothill College. Dr. Mineris an outstanding administratorand an engaging individualwith a long track record as atireless advocate for students.”
Even though Miner will befamiliar with her surroundings, her job as president will differin many ways.
Her job as VP was mainlywithin De Anza. For example, she said there is “a lot ofrule implementation and 12instructional deans who reportto me,” Miner said.
On the other hand, her jobas president will have moreof an external focus, which involves resource development, fundraising, business and industry, plus working with other educationalinstructors.
In an e-mail sent out to De Anzafaculty, De Anza President BrianMurphy said, “I know that you joinme in wishing her the very best inher new role with our sister college, despite the enormous gap created atDe Anza by her leaving. Judy will bemissed deeply.”
Miner said that she would missmeeting the deans on a weekly basisand the evaluations of the facultybecause they are great people to workwith. She describes her transition as avery long juggling act. However, sheis not starting with a blank slate, as shehas worked with Foothill personnelfor many years.
It is unknown who will replaceMiner’s position. The deadline forapplications for interim vice presidentwas last Friday.
A going away party will thrownby administration and staff in Miner’shonor on Wednesday, May 3o. It isfrom 2-5 p.m. in the Sunken Gardenand the cost is $10.
