Moving on: Voss, Smith and Chiu prepare for life after ICC

    LA VOZ ONLINE EXCLUSIVE

Edward Voss banged his gavel for the last time at 2:27 p.m. Wednesday, concluding his final Inter-Club Council meeting as ICC Chair. Voss relinquished his position to his newly elected successor, Sarah Joy Callahan, ending his one-year tenure as Chair.

“I have been able to empower my fellow clubs, both by having an eagle eye on their activities and encouraging them to throw events and ask for Inter-Club Council funds,” Voss told La Voz in an email interview.

“With the opportunity of being a chair, I have learned the importance of responsibility, reliability, and time management,” said Roxanne Chiu in email to La Voz. Chiu passed on her role as the ICC Chair of Finance to Mark Schopmeyer Wednesday.

George E. Smith, who was replaced by Hala Hyatt from the Muslim Student Association, said of his experience with the ICC, “I loved working with the people.”

There is life after the ICC and the three former Chairs have plans. “I plan to attend either the University of California Santa Cruz, Irvine or Berkeley, studying English with the goal of becoming a successful writer and teacher,” said Voss.

“I will be involved in clubs and I will continue to take on a leadership position at De Anza College,” said Chiu.

“I will be the Vice-President of the Catholic Student Club and involved in the DASB,” said Smith. He has also agreed to be the Secretary for De Anza’s new Cambodian Heritage club.

The outgoing chairs also mentioned what they wished had gone better during their year in office.

Voss stated, “I think perhaps if the three of us had all come into our positions with a better working knowledge of our jobs and our connections to groups on campus, we would have been able to better inform the ICC and influence campus life.”

“There is always room for improvement,” Chiu said. “If I were given an opportunity to play my ICC position again, I would definitely have promoted a stronger bridge with the DASB Finance Committee.”

Smith commented that the year would have gone smoother if there had been “less controversial coverage from La Voz.”

At the conclusion of Wednesday’s ICC meeting, the three outgoing chairs shared some parting remarks with those in attendance.

“I love you all,” Smith said.

Chiu joked, “Thanks for putting up with my attitude.”

Voss remarked, “It’s been a great year.” He added, “I’m really glad to have spent this time with you.” Voss also thanked his fellow chairs, and congratulated Chiu for “dealing with La Voz harassment.”

The three outgoing chairs also took time to thank the ICC Advisor, La Donna Yumori-Kaku.
