    Dons drop double-header

Cabrillo stalls injury-ridden team in physical game

Cabrillo College shunted the efforts of the injury plagued De Anza College men’s basketball team 57 – 48 on Jan. 19.

"We played well enough to win," said Coach Mike Riley. "It was a great effort, but we need to make a few more shots."

The Dons shot just 30 percent from the field and 2 – 19 from three-point range.

Injuries to key players have killed the team all season, said Riley.

De Anza played without center John Schrader for the fifth straight game. He averages 10 rebounds per game and "adds strength under the basket," says Riley.

Schrader has been sidelined by an ankle injury and is expected to return to practice this week.

Sophomore Mario Moreno led the team, putting up 14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Matt Jones added 15 points and was 6 – 7 from the line.

The Dons were an impressive 13 – 16 on free throw attempts. The Seahawks’ nine-point halftime lead prevailed, as both teams put up 27 points in the second half. Sophomore forward Maurice Miller led Cabrillo with 16 points. Cabrillo (11 – 7, 2 – 2) dropped the Dons to 2 – 14 on the year.

"I’m very proud of the boys for the way they competed," said Riley.

    Saints rise up, down Dons

The Mission College Saints’ strong shooting and pressure defense lanced the Dons 81-56 on Jan. 19.

In the latter part of the second half the Dons pulled to within nine points, but the Saints 60 percent average from the floor sliced the Dons, extending their halftime lead to 44 – 25.

Sophomore Sarah Miller led the team with 15 points, 11 coming in the first half. Jess Jimenez and Shaline Manuel also scored in double figures, 12 points and 10 respectively.

Joan Marciano left the game with an undisclosed leg injury in the second half.

The mens’ team will travel to Gavilan College and the women will face off with the hosting Chabot College on Wednesday.
