De Anza lesbian / gay community plans Halloween

Halloween. What could be a better time for students to party? The weather is horrible, the nights are lengthening and they’re stuck on campus anyway. At least, that seems to be what the members of De Anza’s Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Club think.

“I want the De Anza campus to know that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Quest-ioning community does exist. We are proud of who we are and we want others to see that. And hopefully make a few friends in the process,” said Monika Statkiewicz.

The LGBA club will be hosting a Halloween Party for all LGBQT friends and their allies in Conference Room A on Tues., Oct. 31 from 4 to 7 p.m. Set up begins at 3:30 p.m. for those who would like to come and help decorate.

Though Halloween is traditionally a dark celebration with attendant spookiness, LGBA is planning something on the lighter side. The club would like “to bring friends from the rainbow community and allies together for a few hours of fun and games,” said Statkiewicz. That rainbow community includes support from De Anza’s Music Composition and Performance Coalition, Women’s Awareness and Allies Club, Salsa Club and Students for Justice.

Costumes are encouraged and prizes will be given for best costumes. From 4 to 5:30 p.m. there will be a live band sponsored by MCPC. There will also be a pumpkin-decorating contest. According to Statkiewicz, pumpkins will be provided, but if students want to bring their own pumpkin, please do so. Instead of cutting the pumpkins, contestants will have markers to draw with and gadgets to glue onto them.

“So, give your pumpkin a costume, give her or him two faces to show that she/he is bi. Do whatever you think will win you a prize. It’s all about coming together and having fun,” said Statkiewicz.

And finally, to finish off the night, the club will be showing the cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

If students are not able to attend the party, the LGBA club is planning on throwing other activities throughout the year. Including a Film Festival in the Winter Quarter and a Gay Pride Week celebration during the Spring Quarter.
