    Women’s soccer triumphs

The De Anza Lady Dons soccer team extended their record to 7-2-2 last week after defeating Coast Conference rivals Evergreen, West Valley and Mission.

“We are happy with our play against the conference teams, but still can improve,” said coach Cheryl Owiesny.

On Sept. 29, the Lady Dons rolled over first-year team Evergreen 11-0. They followed that up with a 5-0 victory over West Valley on Oct. 3. Then they defeated Mission 9-0 last Thursday. In one week’s span, they shut out three teams, outscoring them 25-0. Through 11 games, the Lady Dons have given up five goals.

Earlier in the season, the Lady Dons struggled to score early in the game, predominantly in the first half. Against Evergreen, Tiffany Colen’s pass set up Lindsay Spanek’s opening minute goal. Another five minutes later, Tracy Hess extended the Lady Dons’ lead to 2-0. The mode was set and the Lady Dons controlled the ball, not allowing Evergreen to pass midfield in the first half.

“The whole team had an excellent game,” said Owiesny after the Evergreen game.

Goalie Jennifer Churchill, who scored the seventh goal of the Evergreen game on a penalty kick and Danielle Boulger stated that Owiesny wanted the team to strike earlier in the games.

In the Evergreen contest, the Lady Dons scored seven goals in the first 40 minutes, and against West Valley they scored three goals in the first half. Scoring early, the Lady Dons’ carried adrenaline and momentum into the second half, allowing them to be conservative in the latter portions of the games.

“I haven’t felt that we have played to our potential yet,” said Owiesny when asked about the team’s recent performance.

The Lady Dons are undefeated in conference matchups (6-0-1) and have a week off before their next game against Hartnell on Oct. 14, at De Anza, at 1 p.m.
