History 17A, B and C redefined, now satisfy CSU requirements

American history is checkered with revolutions.

The Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, the sexual revolution … now De Anza has revolutionized the way students can take required History 17 classes.

According to David Howard-Pitney, De Anza History instructor, for decades History 17A was the only history course that could, in conjunction with Political Science-001, fulfill the California State University system’s American Institutions requirement.

This is why History 17A gets “monstrous enrollments compared to any other history course” said Howard-Pitney.

Now, however, any of the three History 17 classes, along with POLI 1, will fulfill this requirement.

“The History Department has been working hard in recent years to diversify the major history courses available to students which can fulfill more transfer institutions’ requirements,” said Howard-Pitney.

Howard-Pitney also cites added flexibility for the students as a reason for the change.

The De Anza History Department has also slightly revised what eras each class covers in order to emphasize the significance of the development of the United States Constitution in each class.

The new time periods covered by the History classes are: Colonial through Early National for 17A, 19th Century for 17B, and 20th Century for 17C.
